Flying Air Canada? Aeroplan isn't the only option.

When flying on Air Canada, you may earn points in any Star Alliance member airline's frequent flyer program.  This choice may be made when your ticket is purchased, or when you check-in at the airport.

Earn more points.

For many economy seats (fare classes V, Q, L and A, now called Relax & Return products) on Air Canada flights between Canada and Bermuda, you will only only 50% of the miles flown.  Before 2006, points were awarded for 75% of the miles flown.  Before 2002, points were awarded for 100% of the miles flown.

If you request credit in programs other than Aeroplan, full points will be awarded in that program, not just 50%.

For example, a flight from Bermuda to Toronto will earn you 562 Aeroplan points, or 1125 US Airways Dividend Miles, or 1125 United Airlines Mileage Plus points.

Spend fewer points to fly.

Tickets are cheaper on some programs than others.

For example, Aeroplan charges 40,000 points for an Air Canada economy ticket between Canada and Bermuda.  Both US Airways and United charge only 35,000 points for the same ticket -- yes, on Air Canada!  For a US Airways ticket from USAirways, tickets can be obtained for only 30,000.

Keep your points.

Under one of Aeroplan's new policies, points earned but not used within 7 years will expire.  Other frequent flyer programs don't ever expire points as long as you have activity in your account.

Under another new policy of Aeroplan, your entire account will expire after 12 months of having no activity (it used to be 36 months).  USAirways' equivalent policy is 18 months.  United's policy is still 36 months.

So now you know your options and can make the best choice for you.  Sit back and enjoy your flight.
